Tegrity Notes
Instructor Guide
Introduction
This document contains guidelines and best practices on how
to use the Tegrity Pen and the Tegrity Notes software during class, on a weekly
basis, and when studying for an exam. In addition, this instructor guide will
provide guidelines on how to promote Tegrity Pen usage in class and during
study.
Clarifying Students
Misconception About Tegrity Notes
The following must be communicated to the students.
- Students
DO NOT need to study from the computer – many student think
that Tegrity forces them to read their notes and study from the computer.
This is a wrong assumptions.
Tegrity helps students to create bookmarks on their notebook (e.g., using asterisk or star
signs) in order to refer back to the recorded class, only when a question or additional clarification
is needed. Thus, students should use their notebooks and refer to the
computer only when they want to bring the instructor back at a
specific point.
If the student does not have a need to refer back to the recorded lecture,
that’s is definitely OK
- Tegrity
Notebook is not an additional notebook, but a replacement for the
student’s current notebook. Student should use the Tegrity Notebooks using
Tegrity Pen, and other colored pens and highlighters, exactly as they were
using the traditional notebooks.
However, student should remember that only notes taken with the Tegrity
Pen create bookmarks to the recorded lecture.
Tegrity in Class
- Remember
to record every class
- Remind
your students to have their Tegrity Pen and Notebook out to start taking
notes.
Remember – you can track students
who are using it, by utilizing Tegrity reporst.
- Remind
the students to install the latest Tegrity update (they will get and
automatic message), since it fixes all the problem that they have
experienced in the past.
- From
your teaching material, select an important topic that you have covered in
the class, and request the students to review it. As an example, lets
assume that the “Side Effects in Nancee Quinn’s “Autonomic and CNS
continued” class is an important section. Nancee could have asked the
students to review the “Side Effects” section since it is an important
section, that might be covered in a test. The Instructor should ask the
students to use their Tegrity Notes in case of questions in order to refer
back to the recorded lecture, and
that the instructor will not answer student’s questions if they have not
used their Tegrity Notes first.
- Whenever
you mention a certain topic will be on an exam, ask the students to flag their
notes, for example, with 2 asterisks. The mark will be a bookmark point for
the students during study, allowing students to review this specific point
when studying for the exam.
How you may use the
Tegrity Pen even in a class that uses hand-out sheets
The following are recommendation
for students on how to use handouts with Tegrity Notes
- When
using handouts, students should write the date in their Tegrity Notebook
and the hand-out sheet.
- Student
can use their Tegrity Pen on both their hand-out sheets and their
notebooks.
- Whenever
the students need to create a written bookmark for a section in their
handout, students should use their Tegrity Notebook to simply mark a
reference sign to the handout (e.g., asterisk + handout section #). This
can be useful whenever the instructor discusses something the student
would potentially like to review later, such as, a test question or a
topic they do not fully understand.
Please remind the
students: Even without using the Tegrity Pen in class, student can always view
the class recording or part of it, later from D2L.
Viewing Reports and
Statistics
- You
can access the viewing reports and statistics for your course by
navigating to your D2L course, clicking the Tegrity button for Instructors,
and then clicking Reports.
- Using
the Viewing Reports make sure that each student has imported his or her
notes, and reviewed the lecture you asked them for.
