Play it safe. It is possible for someone with the right equipment to monitor your network traffic. Never submit sensitive information such as credit card numbers, pin numbers, etc. through un-encrypted web pages.
Know the rules. No wireless access points are to be installed on the Southeast Tech network or within any Southeast Tech facility without the express written permission of the Office of Information Technologies. All wireless access points operating on the Southeast Tech network are to be installed, configured, and maintained by Office of Information Technologies. Unauthorized wireless devices using the same frequency spectrum as 802.11b (2.4 GHz) or 802.11a (5 GHz) should not be used within any Southeast Tech facility. Private 802.11b wireless networks (ad-hoc mode) are not permitted within any Southeast Tech facility. The testing of new or emerging wireless technologies or the demonstration of wireless products must be coordinated through the Office of Information Technologies. Request for special wireless installations or suspension of the MAC address authentication system should be submitted in writing to the Office of Information Technologies (Helpdesk@southeastmn.edu) for approval. The Office of Information Technologies retains the right to remove or disable any device that is in violation of this policy.
Take responsibility. The security and integrity of your computer ultimately resides with you. You should assume that your system is visible to any would-be hacker on the net and act accordingly. Personal firewalls and anti-virus software are highly recommended. Proper configuration and regular software updates are a must.
Protect yourself. You may be held accountable for any violation of Southeast Tech policy perpetrated with a wireless card registered in your name. To protect yourself, please follow the guidelines below.
