Besides making backups on your hard drive, you will probably want
to backup your stuff on the network. Why? Oh, just in case your laptop is stolen or damaged or
computer crashes. Our servers are very reliable and is backed up nightly, and you’ll sleep that
much better at night.
Every student and faculty has some space on the servers. This is called your PST (Personal Storage).
The procedure for making backups follows.
- To save to the network:
- In the "Save As" box pick the I drive
- Double click on your user name
- Move existing files to the network:
- Open the Windows Explorer (not the Internet Explorer) to access your hard
drive. This can be done by going to the Start Menu, then Programs,
then select Windows Explorer.
- Make sure you are viewing the C: drive, your main hard drive. You can
do this by clicking on the "C:" from the folder tree on the left-hand portion of
Windows Explorer.
- On the contents portion of Windows Explorer (the right-hand portion),
right-click on the "Data" folder. The Data folder will become highlighted and a
popup menu is displayed. Select Copy.
- Now switch to the I: drive, the backup server. Do this just as you
selected the C: drive, by selecting it from the folder tree on the left.
- On the contents half of the Explorer, you will see hundreds of folders.
Double-click yours (such as Jim.Smith). This will open the contents of your PST
folder.
- Now Paste here. Do this by right-clicking anywhere within your PST
folder contents, then selecting Paste from the popup menu.
- You now will see a small status menu depicting the copying of files. How
long it takes depends on how many files you have in your Data folder. As soon as
it’s finished, you’re done!
- To restore, reverse the procedure; Copy from your PST, and Paste
to your C: drive.
