Bookmark: To mark a specific area in a document
or an entire document for retrieval at a later time.
Calendar: Here you can
view upcoming events. You can also add new events to your
calendar. Events can be viewed by the day, week or month.
Chats: A real time conversation between two
or more users via a computer. After the chat session has been
initiated, either user can enter text on their keyboard. It
will then appear on the other user's monitor.
Classlist: This area
is used to display the names of the students enrolled in the
course. The Instructor's name and e-mail address will also
be listed. If the User's name is highlighted in yellow, they
are currently online.
Cookies: When you visit
a web page a small file is placed on your computer.
Course Content: Here
you can view specific course topics. They may be either presented
to you in a multimedia form or in HTML format. You can access
this area by clicking on Course Content on the top of the
navigation tool bar.
Discussion: Discussions
allow you to communicate with your classmates in online courses.
Unlike "Chats", Discussions let you interact with
your classmates and Instructors without having to be online
at the same time. This allows the Instructors to provide you
with feedback. You can have multiple, ongoing discussions
about various topics all at the same time.
Dropbox: The dropbox is
used if instructors request that you submit your papers electronically.
This is the most common method of submission.
E-mail: Short for electronic mail. You enter
messages using your keyboard. You then send the message to
the recipient by entering the Recipient's e-mail address on
the address line. You can also send a copy of your e-mail
to several other users at the same time. Sent messages are
stored in the user's electronic mail box until they retrieve
them.
Events: This is the area
that upcoming course events are displayed. The listings can
be displayed in detail by clicking on calendar .
Firewall: A system used
to prevent unauthorized access to a network.
Font: Text characters that are a specific style
and size.
Gradebook : This is the
area that you can view your grades on assignments and quizzes.
You can only see your grades. You are not allowed to see anyone
else's.
HTML: Abbreviation for HyperText Markup Language,
the language used to create documents on the web.
Java Script: A language
introduced by Netscape to allow web authors to design sites
that the user can interact with. Javascript can interact with
HTML which allows web site authors to add zing to their web
sites.
Internet Cache: A temporary storage place for
internet memory. When you view web pages the files that you
look at are automatically stored on your hard disk under your
browser's directory (for example: Netscape or Internet Explorer).
The next time that you visit the same page your computer can
pull the file from your computer's cache instead of pulling
it from the original server. This saves time.
Plug Ins: A small software
program that works in tandem with a web browser to extend
it's capabilities. An example of a plug-in would be Macromedia
Flash Player, it allows you to play multimedia files using
your web browser. There are many plug-ins available for free
download on the Internet
Quizzes: When available,
your course quizzes can be accessed by clicking on Quizzes
on the top of the navigation toolbar.
Shortcut: A desktop icon, that when double
clicked on will bring up a program or data object.
URL: Abbreviation for Uniform Resources Locator.
It is the address (for example: www.southeastmn.edu) of resources
on the web.
Web Browser: Software that is used to find
and display web pages. The two most popular are are Microsoft
Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator.
